Autism Speaks is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization. Their vision centers on creating “an inclusive world for all individuals with autism throughout their lifespan.” Over the years, they merged with several earlier autism research/advocacy organizations (e.g. Cure Autism Now, National Alliance for Autism Research) to pool their efforts under one umbrella.
What they do / How they help
Information & Support Resources: They provide a wealth of tools for individuals with autism, their caregivers, families and communities — including guides for newly diagnosed children or adults, resource directories to find local services, and support for navigating school, health, and community-based services.
Advocacy & Policy Work: Autism Speaks works at local, state, and federal levels to advocate for laws, funding, and programs that support the needs of autistic individuals — in education, healthcare, employment, housing, and more.
Research and Innovation: The organization funds and supports research — from basic science to social and behavioral research — aimed at understanding autism across the lifespan, improving care, and developing supports to improve quality of life.
Supports for Adults and Transitions: In addition to childhood supports, Autism Speaks offers resources for autistic adults — such as employment training, housing support, social groups, and guidance for transitions (e.g. from adolescence to adulthood).
Community Engagement & Awareness: Through outreach, public awareness campaigns, and collaborations with service providers, they aim to increase societal understanding and acceptance of autism — reducing stigma and promoting inclusion.
